Zakat — The Obligatory Charity

Bismillāhir-Raḥmānir-Raḥīm

Zakat (زكاة) is a duty of Muslims in which they must give their wealth to the needy people. It is also the 3rd pillar of Islam.

As there are a lot of people in need, giving Zakat is something appreciated and gives you good in return, as Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) says in the Qur'an:

"And establish prayer and give Zakat, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves — you will find it with Allah." (1)

Zakat can be given at any amount, even the littlest of it brings rewards.

Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) says in the Qur'an:

"So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it." (2)

The same applies if one does evil:

"And whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it." (3)

It is also not permitted to spend wealth in a wasteful manner, as Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) says in the Qur'an:

"And do not spend wastefully." (4)

Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

"Allah said: Spend in charity, O son of Adam, and I will spend on you." (5)

Abu Hurairah also reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

"Charity does not decrease wealth." (6)

I ask Allah to make us all of the Muttaqūn and allow us to continuously give Zakat to the needy.

May Allah bless you, and shukran.
