What is Athar?

Bismillāhir-Raḥmānir-Raḥīm

Athar (أثر) are sayings, advice and actions from the Sahabah (companions of the Prophet ﷺ). They are similar to Hadith.

An example of an Athar is this quote from ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه):

"The Kursī is the place of the Two Feet, and as for the ʿArsh, no one has the ability to give it’s immenseness." (1)

Athar are found in numerous Athar books such as Ibanah al-Kubra, Kitab al-Ilm, Kitab as-Sunnah, Kitab az-Zuhd, Sharh Usul al-I'tiqad, ar-Rihla fi Talab al-Hadith, Sharaf Ashab al-Hadith, Iqtida al-Ilm al-Amal, Kitab Taqyid al-Ilm, and Jami' Akhlaq ar-Rawi.

May Allah bless you, and shukran.
